The topic of product recall is timely. Daily recalls elevate industry interest in Product Recall Insurance, especially for food industry clients.

Many prior food safety incidents originated in Mexico and Latin America, however the recent cantaloupe crisis has been traced to Colorado. This outbreak is already the deadliest food-borne outbreak in the United States in more than a decade.

With 18 people dead, 100 people sickened and a latency period estimated to last

2-3 months, the magnitude of this event is not yet known. Without Product Refusal Coverage, even clients with best practices and safe products can be impacted by tainted products in their market segment. Meat, produce

and shell fish continue to be recalled. Recent meat and romaine lettuce recalls highlight the breadth of exposure from "mom and pop" growers to industry giants. Food-borne illnesses due to vibrio, normally contracted from shellfish, are up 115% since 1996.
